Basically, the iSi Twist and Sparkle is useful to CO2 charge water and other liquids. It will charge 4 cups of water or 3 cups of other liquids (just not milk - who wants carbonated milk anyway?). The starter set includes the Twist and Sparkle injector, special pressure bottle, and three iSi chargers.
The taste is good but requires a little chemistry and biology knowledge to get it correct. From what I have read, the CO2 will produce a sour taste in the mouth. This is similar to an acidic solution. The CO2 is dissolved in solution with water or other liquid. A byproduct is the production of carbonic acid, which will also produce a sour taste. So, all in all, there should be a slight sour taste in the liquid that has been carbonated. Other reviewers have mentioned this aftertaste, and I believe this is the science behind the funny taste some have experienced.
Chargers are used to store CO2 under pressure to be injected into the water or other liquid. All chargers are not the same. The iSi chargers that are included with the set are the proper size to work with the injector. They are 6.5 cm in length. The Leland chargers that I purchased were a bit too short. They are 6.35 cm (2.5 in) in length. They do not work in my unit. Fortunately, I am mechanically inclined, and I found a way around the length difficulty. The Leland chargers will work, but you have to think your way through the problem. As I stated in my iSi chargers review, buy the iSi chargers as a safety net.
Whatever liquid you put into the bottle, note that the liquid has to be chilled to absorb the most CO2. Generally, solids require warm or hot liquids to dissolve effectively, gasses require cold temperature liquids to dissolve as completely as possible. Do not freeze the liquid in the bottle though, just chill it to as cold as possible to remain in the liquid state.
Please note that this is not the cheapest way to make carbonated water. I can find cans of store brand flavored selzer water that I can purchase cheaper than using this system. However, I have the flexibility to make soda water, flavored selzer water, or virtually any other carbonated liquid. Plus, it is just darn cool.

I just love the taste of seltzer water. We've great municipal water that needs no added filtration--when carbonated, it tastes better than the premium commercially bottled seltzer water (we did a taste test). So handy. It definitely makes a difference to start with fridge-cold water..we even pop the empty plastic bottle back in the fridge so it's already cold when we make the next bottle. And it's fun to see the carbonation action! We are so pleased that we just bought a second kit to give as a gift. What's not to like?!

I recommend making Zatarain's Root Beer with this. Make yourself some concentrated syrup:
- Buy a 1 liter thing of seltzer for < $1. Dump it out. :)
- Put 2 cups of sugar in water on the stove. Use enough water to cover the sugar with just a little bit of water on top. Heat it up until the sugar is well disolved.
- Let the pan cool - shove it in a snowbank.
- Put the sugar water (simple sugar) in the seltzer bottle.
- Add 2 Tbsp Zatarain's Root Beer.
When you're ready to use it, put 3/4 cup of the syrup in your Sodastream bottle, fill it up the rest of the way with water, twist, and sparkle.
Delicious!
This is WAY cheaper than sodastream, and you have many more options.
You may have to put some tape or something on the top of the CO2 cartridge if it's not iSi brand. I found that some of the 3rd party cartridges are shorter. After you insert the cartridge into the unit, shove some doubled up tape or a little cardboard or something, and you're good to go. Minimum hassle.
